Raiders Parted Ways With OC Bill Musgrave, Promoting QBs Coach Todd Downing

Update:

John Middlekauff reports that the Raiders are promoting QBs coach Todd Downing to offensive coordinator, replacing Bill Musgrave.

  • Albert Breer mentions that the Raiders actually blocked Downing from interviewing for offensive coordinator jobs elsewhere in past and ultimately didn’t wanna lose him.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media is reporting that the Raiders will be in the market for a new offensive coordinator, as Bill Musgrave is not expected to return to the team for the 2017 season.

Musgrave’s contract with the Raiders was set to expire, so he’s not technically being fired.

As for a potential replacement candidate, Rapoport mentions QBs coach Todd Downing as someone to keep an eye on if the team’s looks to promote from within.

The Raiders should have no trouble attracting quality candidates if they want to expand their search, considering the talent they have on the offensive side of the ball.

Musgrave, 49, began his NFL coaching career with the Raiders back in 1997 as their quarterbacks coach. Since then, he’s worked for a number of teams including the Eagles, Panthers, Jaguars, Redskins, Falcons and Vikings before returning to the Raiders as their offensive coordinator in 2015.

In 2016, Musgrave’s offense ranked No. 11 in points scored, No. 19 in total yards, No. 6 in rushing yards and No. 13 in passing yards.

We’ll have more regarding other candidates to take over as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator as the news is available.
