The Oakland Raiders have exercised OLB Khalil Mack‘s fifth-year option, according to Peter Schrager.
The fifth-year option is guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.
This was a no-brainer move for the Raiders, especially considering that they plan to address QB Derek Carr‘s contract this year and wait until next season to lock up Mack. This makes the fifth-year option all the more important to the Raiders.
Beyond that, Mack is already one of the best defensive players in the game, and has earned a long-term deal.
Mack, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Raiders back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $18,677,002 contract and stands to make a base salary of $690,000 to go along with a $2,276,865 roster bonus for the 2017 season.
In 2016, Mack appeared in all 16 games for the Raiders and recorded 73 tackles, 11 sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown, five forced fumbles, three recoveries and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 1 edge defender out of 105 qualifying players.
