Raiders Placing WR Griff Whalen On IR, Release OT Breno Giacomini

The Raiders are expected to place WR Griff Whalen on injured reserve with a turf toe injury, according to Vic Tafur.

The Raiders also released OT Breno Giacomini and signed DL Connor Flagel and CB Jurell Carter.

  • Michael Gehlken adds that Whalen is a candidate to be released with an injury settlement at a later time.

Whalen, 28, signed on with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford back in 2012. He spent f0ur years in Indianapolis before he was placed on injured reserve and later waived from the list back in January of last year.

The Dolphins later signed him to a contract only to cut him loose at the start of last season. Whalen had brief stints with the Chargers and Patriots before signing on with the Ravens this last July.

Whalen signed a one-year contract with the Raiders back in March.

In 2017, Whalen appeared in two games and caught four passes for 23 yards receiving and no touchdowns for the Ravens.

Giacomini, 32, is a former fifth-round pick of the Packers back in 2008. He was signed off of the Packers’ practice squad in 2010 by the Seahawks and spent four years in Seattle before joining the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in 2014.

Giacomini was entering final year of his four-year, $18 million contract when the Jets cut him loose last year and he eventually signed on with the Texans a few weeks after the 2017 draft.

The Raiders signed Giacomini to a contract this past March.

In 2017, Giacomini appeared in all 16 games for the Texans and is rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 80 offensive tackle out of 81 qualifying players.
