Raiders QB Derek Carr Out Indefinitely With Broken Fibula, Undergoing Surgery

Update:

Raiders HC Jack Del Rio announced after Sunday’s win over the Colts that QB Derek Carr is out indefinitely with a broken fibula, per Vic Tafur.

  • David Chao mentions that surgery will end Carr’s 2016 season but he will likely be fully healed in time for next season.

You can expect the Raiders to place Carr on season-ending injured reserve in the coming days and sign someone to their roster.

Raiders QB Derek Carr went down with an apparent ankle injury during the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Colts and has been replaced by Matt McGloin.

Carr was injured after being sacked by Colts pass-rusher Trent Cole.

Based on video, David Chao believes Carr may have a right high-ankle injury similar to the injury sustained by Titans QB Marcus Mariota earlier today.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported a few weeks ago that the Raiders are expected to focus on signing Carr to a long-term extension during the offseason before turning their attention to a new contract for OLB Khalil Mack.

Florio mentioned that the Raiders have the ability to add another year to Mack’s rookie contract by picking up his fifth-year option next April. However, Carr will also be entering the final year of his rookie contract, but Oakland doesn’t have a fifth-year option for Carr, considering that he was a second-round pick.

If the Raiders can’t reach an agreement on a long-term deal with Carr, there’s no question he’ll be franchised in 2018, as he’s proven to be among the best young quarterbacks in the game.

Carr, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Raiders back in 2014. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $5,371,802 contract and stands to make a base salary of $733,746 for the 2016 season.

Entering today’s game, Carr had thrown for 3,705 yards while completing 63.5 percent of his passes to go along with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding Carr’s injury as the news is available.
