Michael Wagaman of ESPN.com writes that Raiders QB Matt Schaub‘s time in Oakland could be coming to an end now that they plan to move forward with Derek Carr as their starting quarterback.
Wagaman mentions that Schaub would either have to accept a pay cut and restructure his current contract or run the risk of being released by the Raiders in the coming months.
As of now, Schaub is actually among the top-20 highest paid quarterbacks in the league, despite the fact that he’s a clear backup heading into the 2015 season.
Schaub, 33, signed a two-year, $13.5 million contract that included $8 million guaranteed after the Raiders sent a sixth-round pick to the Texans for him.
He’s scheduled to make a base salary of $5.5 million for the 2015 season. However, releasing Schaub would free up all $5.5 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap.com.
The Raiders have plenty of cap space to work with, but it would still be a lot of money to pay a backup that has struggled as much as Schaub has in recent years.
In 2014, Schaub was active for 11 games, but was limited to playing just 19 snaps. He completed 5 of 10 passes for 57 yards and two interceptions.
