Raiders Release Veteran FB Marcel Reece

Update:

The Oakland Raiders have announced that they’ve officially released veteran FB Marcel Reece.

I want to thank Marcel as a player and as a person for all that he has given to the Oakland Raiders,” said General Manager Reggie McKenzie. “What he has meant to the organization and to me over the past few years is hard to put into words, but his actions, both on and off the field, speak louder than any words can. This was a tough decision. Not enough can be said about Marcel’s commitment to his teammates and his pride in the Raiders, and we wish him and his family nothing but the best.”

“Marcel was a great teammate and I appreciate him as a player on the field and as a man off the field,” said Head Coach Jack Del Rio. “I wish him all the best moving forward.

The Oakland Raiders have released FB Marcel Reece on Monday, according to Doug Kyed.

  • Ian Rapoport mentions that with the Raiders signing FB Jamize Olawale to a three-year, $6 million extension last year, it spelled the end of Reece’s time in Oakland.
  • Rapoport adds that Olawale is viewed as a more explosive by the Raiders.

Reece just finished serving his four-game suspension, which dated back to last year, but this still comes as a surprise.

Reece, 31, was in the final year of his four-year, $14.423 contract that included $7.2 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $2.6 million for the 2016 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Reece will free up $2,191,176 in available cap space while creating $880,839 in dead money.

In 2015, Reece appeared in 15 games for the Raiders and ran for 36 yards on 10 carries to go along with 30 receptions for 269 yards receiving and three touchdowns.
