Raiders Rumors: Matt Schaub, Josh Freeman & Michael Vick

Update:

Albert Breer confirms that reports the Raiders are, in fact, looking at free agent QB Josh Freeman and would have interest in Matt Schaub in he was available.

  • Breer adds that the Raiders would likely “kick the tires” on Freeman and Schaub before turning their attention to Michael Vick.
  • However, Breer mentions that Vick is “unlikely” to be an option for Oakland.  to land there.

According to Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com, the Oakland Raiders have Matt Schaub as the top quarterback target this offseason.

  • Gutierrez adds that current Jets QB Mark Sanchez is the team’s No. 2 quarterback.
  • Interestingly enough, Gutierrez mentions that Josh Freeman and Michael Vick come in as the Raiders’ No. 3 and No. 4 options respectively.

Of course, Schaub and Sanchez are both under contract with their respective teams, but they are widely expected to be released some time soon.

As for the other two options, it’s a little surprising to hear that an NFL values Freeman more than Vick, but it’s probably better for them to bring in someone who isn’t already well into their thirties in the hope that they can provide an adequate bride to a franchise quarterback at some point.

It’s pretty hard to get excited about any of these options. The Raiders would probably be better served using their first-round pick on a quarterback if they are unable to trade back.

Recent reports have suggested that the Raiders are high on Fresno State QB Derek Carr, so he could be someone to watch in the months leading up to this year’s NFL Draft.
