Raiders Sign Packers RFA S Sean Richardson To An Offer Sheet

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Raiders have signed Packers restricted free agent S Sean Richardson to an offer sheet.

  • Rapoport’s source says that Richardson’s offer sheet with the Raiders is a one-year, $2.55 million deal.
  • According to ESPN’s Adam Caplan, Richardson’s one-year deal breaks down to: $2.35 million fully guaranteed, $1 a million base salary, $1.35 million signing bonus, and a $200,000 reporting bonus.

The Packers can match the Raiders offer, but because they used a low-round tender on him, they wouldn’t receive any compensation if they choose to not match Oakland’s offer sheet.

Richardson would have made $1,542,000 for the 2015 had he signed his restricted tender, but it looks like the Raiders have offered him a better deal.

Green Bay will now have five days to make a decision regarding the Raiders’ offer sheet.

It’s interesting to see Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie go after one of his former players after he the Packers tendered him a contract.

I’m sure Green Bay would like to retain Richardson and maintain their safety depth, but this could be a difficult decision for them.

Richardson, 25, signed on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt back in 2012. In 2014, Richardson appeared in all 16 games for the Packers and recorded 25 tackles.

  1. Reggie must be planning on using Richardson as a starting safety. 2.5M is a lot to spend on a situational backup. Ted won’t match that offer.

    • My thought exactly. Richardson is their #4 or #5 option, depending on if they want to use Micah Hyde at safety if needed. On top of that, Richardson is an undrafted free agent who has already had a serious neck injury. I’m sure GB would like to keep him since he’s a big contributor on special teams, but it’s just a lot of money.
