At Least Four Teams Interested In S Eric Weddle Including Raiders

Update:

Kevin Acee of the Union Tribune reports that free agent S Eric Weddle has “at least four irons in fire” with the Raiders being one of them.

  • According to Acee, Weddle is just in the talking phase of the free agent process with these teams as of now.
  • Jason La Canfora does not expect Weddle to sign with a team “anytime soon” and will consider all of his options before doing so.

The Panthers, Patriots and Steelers have all come up as speculative options for Weddle.

According to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Raiders are currently “working on” free agent S Eric Weddle.

  • However, Tafur mentions that he hasn’t confirmed a visit to Oakland for Weddle at this point in time.
  • Scott Bair also mentions that it appears as though the Raiders will try to land Weddle, as there has been interest there from Oakland.

The market has been slow-moving for Weddle thus far, but he has said that he plans to take his time to fine the best opportunity for him.

Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer previously reported the Panthers are were interested in Weddle and citing the fact that he previously played under Panthers HC Ron Rivera while they were both in San Diego, so that could be something to watch as well.

Weddle, 31, finished a five-year, $40 million contract that included $19 million guaranteed. The Chargers placed him on the injured reserve after Week 16 because of a lingering groin injury.

Weddle is among the best available players in this year’s free agent class.

In 2015, Weddle appeared in 13 games for 79 total tackles, six pass defenses, one fumble recovery and 0.5 of a sack. Pro Football Focus rated Weddle as the No. 33 overall safety out of 88 qualifiers.

We have him featured in our Top 2016 Free Agents list.
