Rams To Begin “Wide-Ranging” HC Search Tomorrow, Focusing On Offensive Coaches

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reports that the Rams will laugh a “wide-ranging” coaching search on Friday.

Florio mentions that Los Angeles will lean toward hiring a coach with an offensive background but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of them hiring a defensive-minded head coach.

With the focus, at least to start, on offensive coaches, Florio writes that Patriots OC Josh McDaniels and Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan figure to be on their list of candidates.

By adding an offensive-minded head coach, the Rams would have someone who could help with the development of No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff, as well as some notable weapons including RB Todd Gurley and WR Tavon Austin.

Florio says that compensation and the amount of power the head coach will be influential factors in regards to who then end up hiring. Beyond that, Florio adds that the roles of GM Les Snead and COO Kevin Demoff figure to impact who takes the job.

There have already been several names mentioned as potential candidates for the Rams’ job including: Jon Gruden, Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll, McDaniels, Shanahan, and Greg Schiano, along with some college coaches such as Mississippi State HC Dan Mullen, Stanford HC David Shaw Wisconsin HC Paul Cryst and Colorado HC Mike MacIntyre.

Harbaugh and Carroll have both made it clear that they have no interest in the job, and some believe Shaw could remain at Stanford.

Overall, the Rams’ job should have plenty of interest, considering they’re in the No. 2 market, have a brand new stadium and some young talent to build around.

We’ll have more regarding the Rams’ coaching search as the news is available.
