Rams Believe They Can Get A Late-Round Pick For Nick Foles In Coming Months

Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com reports that the Rams are holding on to QB Nick Foles because they think they will be able to get a late-round draft pick for him in the coming months.

Breer mentions that the belief internally was that Foles’ trade value would be at a low point between the draft and the start of training camp, which has proved to be true.

However, Breer points out that once training camp opens next month, Foles could be more in demand, considering that he is set to make just $1.75 million for the 2016 season.

Should some team sustain an injury at quarterback, Foles could be a cheap, low cost option worth considering.

This fits with a report from Jason Cole of B/R, who mentioned that the Rams are hoping to trade Foles before the start of the 2016 season.

Cole points out that the Rams have plenty of depth at quarterback with No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff, Case Keenum and Sean Mannion, which makes Foles obviously expendable.

Some have speculated that the Jets could have interest in Foles should he be available, considering that their standoff with Ryan Fitzpatrick is still ongoing. However, the Jets have yet to inquire about his availability.

As of now, Foles counts $8.75 million against the Rams’ 2016 salary cap, which breaks down to a $6 million roster bonus that is guaranteed, $1 million of signing bonus proration and $1.75 million in base salary. Releasing Foles outright would result in a cap hit of $7 million.

If the Rams were able to find a trade partner, they would pick up $6.75 million in cap space and just $2 million in dead money. Although, Cole says teams may be reluctant to trade a draft pick for him at this point in time.

Foles, 27, came over in a trade from the Eagles that sent Sam Bradford to Philadelphia. He had one year remaining on his rookie contract when the Rams signed him to a two-year, $24 million extension back in August of last year.

In 2015, Foles completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 2,052 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 36 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding a potential Foles’ trade as the news is available.
