Rams Decline To Exercise S Mark Barron’s Fifth-Year Option

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Rams will not be picking up S Mark Barron‘s fifth-year option before the May deadline.

Doing so would have cost the Rams $8.263 million for the 2016 season. However, this figure is guaranteed for injury only and wouldn’t have prevented them from working out a long-term deal that would come with a lower cap figure.

Barron is now in position to be an unrestricted free agent in 2016.

Barron, 25, came over in a trade with the Buccaneers last year that sent fourth and sixth-round selections to Tampa Bay in return for the former first-round pick.

He has one year remaining on his four-year, $14.465 million rookie contract that will pay him $2,362,704 for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Barron appeared in all 16 games and recorded 72 tackles, three sacks, a fumble recovery and four pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has Barron rated as the No. 69 safety out of 87 qualifying players this season.
