Report: Pay Cut Could Allow Cortland Finnegan To Return To St. Louis

Update:

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that CB Cortland Finnegan could be back with the Rams next season if he’s willing to accept a reduction in salary.

  • Rapoport adds that the Rams could actually free up more cap space by working out a restructured deal that would reduce Finnegan salary, instead of releasing him outright.
  • Jason Fitzgerald mentions that this would make sense given that Finnegan has in $3 million guaranteed salary remaining on his current contract.

Of course, Finnegan will also need to improve his overall play next season to even justify his roster spot.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports writes that “there is no way in hell” the Rams are paying veteran CB Cortland Finnegan the $6 million he’s owned in 2014, especially when he counts $10 million against the team’s salary cap.

La Canfora mentions that St. Louis could designate Finnegan as a post-June 1 release, which would free up $9 million in cap space.

Other roster moves suggested by by La Canfora include releasing G Harvey Dahl and C Scott Wells.

If the Rams parted with these two veteran offensive linemen, they could create another $8.5 million in cap space.

As things stand right now, the Rams have very little cap room to work with, so it would make sense for them consider releasing at least two of these players, so that they can look for upgrades in free agency.

Finnegan, 30, graded out as the second worst qualifying cornerback in the league, according to Pro Football Focus.
