Rams Pick Up $986K Of Cap Room By Reworking P Johnny Hekker’s Contract

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Rams recently restructured the contract of P Johnny Hekker and converted $1.21 million of his 2018 base salary into a signing bonus, which created $968,000 of cap space.

The Rams have been in a tough financial position due to all of the notable offseason additions they’ve made this year. This led to the team releasing CB Kayvon Webster last year in order to fit Ndamukong Suh into their salary cap.

As of this morning, OverTheCap.com had the Rams with just $457,825 of cap room, so they’ll still be pretty tight in terms of cap space moving forward.

Hekker, 28, wound up signing on with the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State back in 2012. He was in the fourth year of his seven-year, $18.57 million when the Rams signed him to a two-year, $9.6 million extension through 2022 last year.

Hekker stands to make base salaries of $1,111,111 (2018), $2,999,992 (2019), and $4,500,054 (2020) over the remainder of the contract.

In 2017, Hekker appeared in all 16 games for the Rams and totaled 2,961 yards on 65 attempts (45.55 YPA) to go along with four touchbacks.
