Rams Rework TE Jared Cook’s Contract, Free Up $900K In Cap Space

The St. Louis Rams had to free up some extra cap space following the addition of S Mark Barron at this week’s NFL trade deadline.

According to Aaron Wilson, $1.201,765 million of TE Jared Cook‘s $3 million guaranteed base salary has been converted to a signing bonus to free up the necessary cap space.

• Brian McIntyre reported a few days ago that the Rams created $900,000 in cap space from this move.

St. Louis has been towards the bottom of the league in regards to available cap space for almost the entire year, so it was clear that a move had to made to fit Barron into their salary cap.

Cook, 27, signed a five-year, $35.11 million contract that included $19 million guaranteed with the Rams back in March of 2013. He has base salaries of $7 million coming his way in the next two years to go along with $7.1 million for the 2017 season.

This year, Cook has caught 27 passes for 331 yards receiving and no touchdowns. However, Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 11 tight end in the league out of 63 qualifying players.
