Rams Will Not Franchise Brandon Lloyd

The NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports that a source close to the Rams has informed him that they will not be using their franchise tag on free agent WR Brandon Lloyd in the coming weeks.

Lloyd joined Pro Football Talk Live this afternoon and mentioned that he was open to the idea but that doesn’t appear to be part of the team’s plan. Lloyd also mentioned that he would like to stay with the team and mentioned that contract negotiations could begin at some point during the week.

The Rams acquired Lloyd from Broncos for a conditional draft pick that turned into a fifth-round selection after he caught 30 passes with the Rams. Reports over the weekend suggested that the Broncos decision to trade Lloyd had more to do with their concern that he would become a distraction as the team adjusted to a run-heavy offense after benching Kyle Orton in favor of Tim Tebow.

The New England Patriots have been tossed out as a speculative option for Lloyd who has turned his career around since working with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Lloyd mentioned that we would “like to entertain” of joining McDaniels in New England but that remains just an idea at this point in time.
