Randall Cobb Admits That Contract Situation Played A Role In Slow Start

Packers WR Randall Cobb has put together a very strong season so far, but he recently admitted that his contract situation played a role in his early struggles.

“I mean, it definitely had something to do with it,” Cobb said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. “But I think I found peace mentally, and that’s the biggest thing, having that peace and being able to not worry about those things.”

The touchdowns have been there for Cobb this year as he currently leads all receivers in touchdowns with eight, but it wasn’t until Week 4’s game against Chicago that he surpassed 58 yards receiving. Since then, Cobb has caught at least one touchdown in ever game and has two 100-yard performances.

“The mental side of things is very important,” Cobb said. “I think I was pressing a little bit too much early on this season, trying to do too much instead of just being myself and doing what I do. Just relaxing and playing ball.

Cobb, 24, has plenty to gain from a big 2014 season as he’s in the final year of his rookie contract and will be among the best available receivers, should he be allowed to test the free agent market.

Previous reports have mentioned that Green Bay is likely to wait until the offseason to address Cobb’s contract, but by then his asking price could be much higher.

Slot receivers haven’t fared well in recent years, which was evident from the Victor Cruz situation. He wound up accepting a six-year, $45.879 million contract that included $15.625 million guaranteed. In terms of guarantees, this contract leaves Cruz as the No. 14 highest paid receiver and well behind several guys that received $20 million guaranteed or more.

Cobb’s situation will certainly be a intriguing topic to monitor over the next five months or so. We have him listed as the No. 12 player in our Top 25 – 2015 Free Agents list.
