Update: Randy Moss Cut, Next Stop?

The Vikings made the release of Randy Moss official. Brad Childress announced that “This decision was made based on what we thought was in the best interests of the Vikings, both in the short and long-term.”

Moss will be placed on waivers tomorrow and will have a new team by Wednesday, assuming someone claims him.

We’ll, it appears that the early reports may not be as accurate as initially thought or Brad Childress has had a change of heart.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Vikings have yet to inform Moss or his agent of his release which means that he could remain with Minnesota despite Childress making it clear to the team that he intended on releasing him.

Jason La Canfora tweets that not everyone within the organization was on board with Childress’s decision. He also mentioned that Moss was not on the waiver list before today’s 4 pm deadline which could suggest that he has had a change of heart. One way or other, this mess will reflect poorly on Childress’s ability to lead the Vikings and could likely seal the deal on his tenure with the team.

In case Moss is waived, here are the likely suitors and their waiver positions:

Rams (13th), Raiders (14th), Redskins (15th), Seahawks (16th), Bears (17th), Dolphins (18th), Chiefs (25th)

Randy Moss‘s second tenure with the Minnesota Vikings was short lived. Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network is reporting that the team has decided to release the Pro Bowl wide receiver Randy Moss.

After Sunday’s loss to the Patriots Moss made it clear that he has little respect for head coach Brad Childress and Vikings team in general. Moss will now have to clear waivers before he can sign on with another team. The real problem for the Vikings is that they traded away a third-round pick for Moss and have now cut their losses. Considering that Childress is on the hot seat, this situation matched with another loss could spell the end for him in Minnesota.

As of now there is plenty of speculation as to whom may place a waiver claim on Moss.

ESPN’s Mike Sando mentions that the Moss could be a great fit the St Louis Rams who are in the running to win their division.

The Cleveland Browns could also use a deep threat option or just an extra wide receiver since they are hurting at the position.

Carolina is another team that will have one of the first chances at claiming Moss and is in desperate need of WR help.

Adam Schefter has the Cowboys, Redskins, Rams, Bears, Dolphins, Raiders, Chiefs, Jets, Patriots and Seahawks as the most likely targets. We’ll try to get this list narrowed down in the coming hours.

Jason La Canfora tweets that the consensus among NFL GM’s is that Moss will end up back on the Patriots. What a steal for the Patriots if this holds true.

One thing to consider is that Moss is still owed $6.4 million for the remainder of this season so who ever ends up claiming him will be on the hook for the remainder of his salary. If no one claims him, the Vikings will end up paying the remainder of his 2010 salary which will allow Moss to sign on to another team and receive two checks.
