Rashard Mendenhall Will Start Once Healthy

Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson said once Rashard Mendenhall returns to full health, he’ll be the team’s starting running back.

“Rashard has always been our lead dog and our top runner. Rashard is the complete package — power, speed, explosiveness,” said Wilson, via Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review“He is the guy who can take a 10-yard run and make people miss and get 20 more. We think Jonathan has things that he is great at. Isaac has some things that he is great at. But Rashard is the complete package. Rashard has proved that he can do it over the long haul.”

Even with great performances out of Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman in the past three games, it appears as though Mendenhall will get the first opportunity to be the team’s starting back, as they will use the “hot hand” approach once all three backs are healthy. Mendenhall is clearly the most talented back out of the three, so it makes sense he would be named the Steelers starter once he returns.
It appears that he’ll likely miss Monday night’s game against the Chiefs. We have him listed as the No. 44 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
