Rashean Mathis Signing A One-Day Contract With Jaguars To Retire With Team

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced Friday that veteran CB Rashean Mathis will sign a one-day contract to retire as a member of the organization.

Mathis announced his retirement back in early March.

The Lions placed Mathis on the reserve/retired list after he announced his retirement, so they’d have to grant him his release to do this.

Mathis, 35, is a former second-round pick of the Jaguars back in 2003. After 10 years in Jacksonville, Mathis signed on with the Lions where he would play the final three years of his NFL career.

Mathis had one year remaining on his two-year, $3.5 million contract that included a $750,000 signing bonus. He would have made a base salary of $1 million this season.

In total, Mathis recorded 576 yards, one sack, nine forced fumbles, five recoveries, 32 interceptions, four defensive touchdowns and 133 pass defenses for the Jaguars and Lions.
