Ravens May Approach NT Haloti Ngata Regarding A Contract Extension

Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com writes that the Baltimore Ravens will look to lower NT Haloti Ngata’s $16 million cap figure this offseason by extending his contract.

Ngata’s $16 million is scheduled to be the highest cap figure on the Ravens roster, so it makes plenty of sense to get that number down to something more manageable, especially with a number of free agents to address like TE Dennis Pitta, DE Arthur Jones, LT Eugene Monroe and ILB Daryl Smith.

Ngata just turned 30 a few weeks ago, but has consistently been one of the best interior defensive linemen in the league for a number of years now. Although he started showing some signs of decline in 2013 as he produced a career low 1.5 sacks for the Ravens defense. Pro Football Focus still had him rated as the No. 18 interior defensive lineman this past season.

He has two years remaining on his five-year, $61 million contract that included $37.1 million guaranteed.

  1. ravens need to release terrell suggs for the seven million dollars they will keep by releasing him.that way they can get a pass rusher that will take less money and still be as dependable as suggs.maybe justin tucker

    • No question that they will have to make some moves in the coming weeks. Parting with Suggs would be a tough loss based on how great of a defensive player he’s been for them, but we have seen a decline in the market value for edge-rushers entering who are already in their 30’s.

It’s worth noting that Tuck will also be 31 once free agency rolls around and he’s played most of career at 4-3 defensive end. Of course, BAL should be able to get him much cheaper than Suggs and his $12M cap figure.
