Ravens Release ILB Jonathan Freeny, Sign ILB Steven Johnson

The Baltimore Ravens announced Tuesday that they’ve released ILB Jonathan Freeny and signed ILB Steven Johnson to a contract.

Freeny, 28, originally signed on with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers back in 2011. He spent four years in Miami before signing on with the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent in 2015.

The Patriots signed him to a two-year contract extension coming out of the preseason last year but elected to cut him loose on Saturday as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players.

The Ravens signed him to a contract a few weeks ago.

In 2017, Freeny has appeared in three games and recorded two tackles and no sacks for interceptions.

Johnson, 29, wound up signing on with the Broncos back in 2012. He spent three years in Denver before he was among their final roster cuts at the start of the 2015 season.

The Titans elected to claim him off of waivers and he finished out the year in Tennessee. Johnson later signed with the Steelers back in March of last year, but his 2016 season ended with him being placed on season-ending injured reserve in November.

Pittsburgh brought Johnson back on a one-year, $855,000 contract this past February only to release him coming out of the preseason.

In 2017, Johnson has been active for one game but has yet to record a statistic.
