Pierce, 23, still had one year remaining on his four-year, $2,655,500 rookie contract, which included a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Pierce will free up $660,000 in cap space next year while also create $138,986 in dead money.
In 2014, Pierce ran for 366 yards on 93 carries (3.9 YPC) to go along with two receptions for 13 yards receiving and two touchdown. Pro Football Focus has him down for playing just 160 snaps, even though they were in desperate need of running back help to start the season.
