Ravens Release TE Dennis Pitta With Injury Waiver

The Baltimore Ravens announced Wednesday that they’ve released veteran TE Dennis Pitta with an injury waiver.

Pitta, unfortunately, suffered a third hip injury last week that has left his career in jeopardy.

The Ravens are reportedly interested in free agent WR Jeremy Maclin and have spoken to the Jets about a trade for WR Eric Decker, so they could use some more cap space and this was one of the easier sources of cap room.

Pitta, 31, is a former fourth-round pick of the Ravens back in 2010. Pitta was in the fourth year of his five-year, $32.5 million contract that includes $16 million guaranteed and set to make base salaries of $5.5 million over the final two years of the contract when agreed to a pay cut back in March.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Pitta will free up $2.5 million of available cap space while creating $2.7 million of dead money.

In 2016, Pitta appeared in all 16 games for the Ravens and caught 86 passes for 729 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 47 tight end out of 63 qualifying players.
