Ravens Release Veteran DE Chris Canty, Free Up $2.66M In Cap Space

The Baltimore Ravens announced the release of veteran DE Chris Canty on Friday.

There was talk that Canty could be among the Ravens players released in order to free up some cap space, so this doesn’t come as a huge surprise.

Canty had reportedly been contemplating retirement, but he’s been working out regularly since the season ended and intends to play next year, according to Aaron Wilson.

Canty, 32, has one year remaining on his three-year, $8 million contract that included $2.84 million guaranteed. He was set to make a base salary of $2.66 million and carried a cap figure of $3,326,668 for he 2015 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Canty will free up $2.66 million in cap space and create $666,668 in dead money.

In 2014, Canty appeared in 11 games for the Ravens and recorded 33 tackles, a half sack, a forced fumble and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 37 defensive end in a 3-4 defense out of 47 qualifying players.
