Ravens Release Veteran RB Justin Forsett

Update:

Mike Garafolo reports that the Ravens attempted to trade RB Justin Forsett last week, but couldn’t get a deal done, so they elected to part ways with him on Tuesday.

Justin Forsett has confirmed the news via his Twitter account that he’s been released by the Ravens.

“It was mutual,” Forsett said. “I felt like my opportunity here was closing. I’m at a phase in my career where I don’t want to sit; I want to play. I have a lot of football left in me.”

Forsett tells Clifton Brown that the Ravens wanted to go younger at running back.

They wanted to go younger. I’ve been fired before. When I was inactive Sunday, I thought it might come,” Forsett said.

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens have informed veteran RB Justin Forsett that he’s being released now that rookie Kenneth Dixon is returning from injury.

Zrebiec says that the Ravens intend to go with their younger options at running back, which means Terrance West and Buck Allen should continue to see more work moving forward.

Yesterday, Ravens HC John Harbaugh was noncommittal about Forsett’s roster spot after he was a healthy inactive for their Week 4 matchup so this doesn’t come as a huge surprise.

Justin Forsett is a highly respected, highly valued guy in my eyes,” Harbaugh said, via Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “It’s a competitive world that we’re in. It’s a competitive league and a competitive sport. He knows that, as well as anybody. We just have to see. All of those personnel things are all to be determined. You can’t say anything about where anything is going to go. You just don’t know. We’ll see how it plays out.”

Forsett, 30, was actually among the team’s roster cuts coming out of the preseason but he later signed a nearly identical contract with the Ravens right before the start of the regular season. He received a two-year, $6 million contract from the Ravens.

Jamison Hensley points out that the Ravens will still owe Forsett his $3 million base salary because he’s a vested veteran who was on their roster to open the year.

In 2016, Forsett has appeared in three games and ran for 98 yards on 31 carries (3.2 YPC) to go along with 11 receptions for 36 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
