Ravens Officially Sign OLB Jason Babin, Place OLB Terrell Suggs On I.R.

Update:

The Baltimore Ravens have officially signed OLB Jason Babin to a contract on Wednesday and placed OLB Terrell Suggs on season-ending injured reserve, according to Jamison Hensley.

Suggs, unfortunately, suffered a torn Achilles’ tendon during Week 1’s loss to the Broncos.

Suggs, 32, is in the second year of his five-year, $28.5 million contract that included $16 million guaranteed. He is set to make a base salary of $1 million (2015), $4.5 million (2016),  $6.5 million (2017-2018).

In 2014, Suggs appeared in all 16 games for the Ravens and recorded 61 tackles, 12 sacks, a fumble recovery, a pass defense and a safety for the Ravens.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the Ravens are signing veteran OLB Jason Babin to a contract after he worked out for the team on Tuesday.

  • According to Garafolo, Babin receives a one-year contract from the Ravens.

Baltimore also brought in free agent OLB Shaun Phillips for a workout as well, but it looks like they preferred to go with Babin.

Baltimore has an obvious need at edge rusher following the loss of Terrell Suggs to season-ending Achilles injury.

Babin, 34, signed a two-year, $3.25 million contract with the Jets last July and hid his option picked up back in February. However, he wound up being among the team’s final roster cuts from a few weeks ago.

In 2014, Babin recorded 26 tackles and two sacks over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Babin rated as the No. 9 outside linebacker in 3-4 defense out of 46 qualifying players.
