Ravens Unlikely To Use Their Franchise Tag

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun writes that even with a new contract in place for QB Joe Flacco, the Ravens are aren’t expected to use their franchise on any of their impending free agents.

The deadline of course is Monday at 4PM ET.

Flacco’s contract was structured so that they’ll have additional cap space to work with, but there’s still a good chance that they’ll lose both OLB Paul Kruger and CB Cary Williams during free agency.

“It’s really practically impossible,” salary-cap expert. “The Ravens wouldn’t be able to tender their restricted free agents and sign Flacco and accommodate a franchise tag. They just don’t have the cap room.”

Baltimore is believed to be focused on re-signing ILB Dannell Ellerbe and S Ed Reed, but we’ll have to see how things play out in the coming days before we have a better idea if it’s actually an option.
