A source tells Adam Schefter that there’s a “very realistic” chance the Chiefs will get RB Jamaal Charles back for the playoffs, despite the fact that he underwent surgery to clean up the meniscus in both of his knees earlier this season.
This fits with a few reports from earlier in the week.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Charles is doing well and working hard in his return from knee scopes on both of his knees and he’s hoping to rejoin the Chiefs for the playoffs.
The Chiefs really helped their odds of securing a playoff spot on Thursday with their win over the Raiders. Kansas City is now in the drivers seat for the AFC West title and could end up securing a bye in the coming weeks.
Kansas City placed him on injured reserve back in early November and the target date tossed out at the time for him to return was Week 17.
Even if Charles is able to return for the playoffs, it’s unlikely he’d have a major role, considering how much time he’s missed this year and the fact that Spencer Ware has been effective for them this season.
Charles, 29, is in the third year of his four-year, $28 million contract that included $8.3 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $2.75 million (2016), and $3.75 million (2017) over the remainder of the contract.
This season, Charles has appeared in three games and rushed for 40 yards on 12 carries (3.3 YPC) to go along with two receptions for 14 yards receiving and a touchdown.
