Redskins Could Be An Option For Frank Gore?

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area writes that a few 49ers’ players could be on the Redskins’ radar now that they’ve hired Scot McCloughan as their new GM.

According to Maiocco, RB Frank Gore, OLB Ahmad Brooks and TE Vernon Davis could all be potential options for Washington, as they look to improve their roster in the coming months.

McCloughan selected Gore in the third round in the 2005 draft while serving as the 49ers’ GM and is considered to be Gore’s “biggest fan.” In fact, Maiocco reports that Gore kept in contact with McCloughan, even after he left the team.

Gore could take on a backup role for the Redskins behind Alfred Morrisconsidering that Roy Helu is set to become a free agent.

According to Maiocco, Davis’ roster spot with the 49ers could be in jeopardy after he put together an underwhelming 2014 season. Davis is slated to make a base salary of $4.95 million next year, which could be enough for the team to at least reconsider the idea bringing him back at that price.

As for Brooks, Maiocco doesn’t see San Francisco keeping him and his 2014 price tag of $7.3 million. Brooks would give them some added depth at outside linebacker in the event they don’t retain free agent Brian Orakpo.

During Friday’s introductory press conference, McCloughan stressed the importance of building through the draft and developing players, so it hard to say that the Redskins will be very active in free agency.

Even so, it would not come as a big surprise to see McCloughan target a few of his former player if the price was right.

Gore, 31, has finished up his  four-year, $25.9 million contract that included $13.5 million guaranteed and will now be an unrestricted free agent.

This season, Gore ran for 1,106 yards on 255 carries (4.3 YPC) to go along with 11 receptions for 111 yards receiving and five total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has Gore rated as the No. 26 running back out of 57 qualifying players.

We have Gore listed as the No. 42 player in our Top 50 – 2015 Free Agents list.

  1. I really don’t think a running back in their 30’s can help us in the future we want to be good for a long time and that move would be very dumb
