Redskins Expected To Keep RGIII As Their Third-String QB Moving Forward

Jeff Darlington of NFL Media reported Saturday that the Redskins will have Colt McCoy listed as their No. 2 quarterback for Week 1’s game behind starter Kirk Cousins.

Even though Robert Griffin III was cleared from a concussion on Friday, Darlington mentioned that RGIII will likely remain the team’s No. 3 quarterback moving forward.

After further consideration the team is more likely to keep Griffin as the third quarterback because of the financial repercussions that they would face if Griffin were to enter a game and be injured,” Darlington reported.

Some have made the case for the Redskins to just cut RGIII loose now that he has been cleared from his concussion.

If Washington is really concerned about playing him and the possibility that he could get hurt, it would make sense for them to just part ways and give both of them a fresh start.

Griffin, 25, is in the final year of his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $3,269,877 for the 2015 season. Washington elected to pick up his fifth-year option worth $16.2 million several months ago.

In 2014, Griffin appeared in nine games and threw for 1,694 yards while completing 68.7 precent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions.
