Redskins Have No Plans To Try To Trade RGIII, Could Be No. 2 QB Soon

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Redskins’ front office remains “adamant about protecting its quarterback depth” this season, and every expectation is that Robert Griffin III will be on the roster beyond the November 3 trade deadline.

According to La Canfora, Washington has yet to make a single call in attempt to trade RGIII, and sources have told him that GM Scot McCloughan will not be doing so, either.

“Scot does not want to trade him,€ one source very familiar with the situation tells La Canfora. €He really doesn’t. That’s not something he is even thinking about. He’s still getting to learn about him and what he can do and what he’s all about. This kid was the 2012 Rookie of the Year for a reason and you don’t just fall into that stuff. He’s not giving up hope on him.”

Beyond that, no team has called Washington to determine an asking price or even engage in preliminary trade talks. Of course, RGIII’s fifth-year option would pay him $16 million for the 2016 season, and is guaranteed for injury.

Sources added that it’s not out of the question for RGIII to assume the backup quarterback duties from Colt McCoy in the coming weeks.

Griffin, 25, is in the final year of his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $3,269,877 for the 2015 season. Washington elected to pick up his fifth-year option worth $16.2 million several months ago.

In 2014, Griffin appeared in nine games and threw for 1,694 yards while completing 68.7 precent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions.
