Redskins Haven’t Closed The Door On Re-Signing Brian Orakpo, Two Sides To Meet Today

Mike Jones reports that the Redskins haven’t closed the door on re-signing free agent OLB Brian Orakpo and the two sides are scheduled to discuss a potential extension on Saturday.

However, Jones adds that it’s hard to say just how likely an agreement on a contract is at this point in time.

Team sources told Dianna Marie Russini yesterday that Orakpo “will not be back” in Washington next year.

The two sides have at least been in contact with one another in recent days, but Orakpo mentioned during an appearance on the NFL Network that there talks regarding a return have been “very minimal,” per Jones.

Recent reports have said that Orakpo is likely to have serious interest from the Falcons and Jaguars once free agency is open for business.

The idea of Orakpo departing in free agency has been talked about for several months now, and dates back to October of last year when was placed on injured reserve with a torn right pectoral.

The Falcons and Jaguars are both in desperate need for a pass-rusher, and Orakpo is clearly in the discussion as one of the best available edge rushers in this year’s free agent class.

Orakpo, 28, played out the 2014 season under the team’s franchise tag and is once again in line to be an unrestricted free agent. Last year, he made a salary of  $11.455 million.

In 2014, Orakpo recorded 24 tackles, a half sack and a pass defense over the course of seven games.

We have him listed as the No. 28 player in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
