Redskins To Hire Chargers LBs Coach Joe Barry As DC?

Update:

Dianna Marie Russini, citing sources close to Chargers LBs coach  Joe Barry and those involved in hiring  process, reports that Washington has yet to Barry as their new defensive coordinator.

However, John Keim mentions that some redskins assistants “clearly expect” Barry to get the job.

John Keim of ESPN is reporting that no decision has been made regarding the Redskins defensive coordinator position as of now.

Zac Boyer confirms that there is no agreement in place with Chargers LBs coach Joe Barry as of now, but he could be the front-runner for the job.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Redskins plan to hire Chargers LBs coach Joe Barry as their new defensive coordinator.

Last night, Rapoport reported that Washington could be deciding between DBs coach Raheem Morris or Barry, so this news shouldn’t come as a complete surprise.

According to Dianna Marie Russini, Morris’ interview with the Redskins was best described as “just ok.

Barry has experience coaching both 4-3 and 3-4 defenses, which means this hire wouldn’t prevent them from sticking with their current defensive scheme.

His first NFL job was as a Quality Control Coach for the 49ers back in 2000. He later took over as the LBs coach for the Buccaneers where he would remain for six years.

In 2007, the Lions offered him their defensive coordinator position, but he was part of the 0-16 Detroit team and was later fired.

Since then, Barry has coached for the Buccaneers and the University of Southern California.

Other candidates for the Redskins’ defensive coordinator position included: Wade Phillips, 49ers TEs coach Eric Mangini, and 49ers DBs coach Ed Donatell.

We’ll have more updates as the news is available.
