Redskins Officially Hire Joe Barry As Defensive Coordinator

Update:

The Washington Redskins officially announced the hiring of Joe Barry as their new defensive coordinator.

Ian Rapoport reports that the Redskins are hiring Joe Barry as their new defensive coordinator.

This comes just an hour or so after the news broke that Vic Fangio is taking over the Bears defensive coordinator.

Rapoport previously reported that the team was hiring Barry as their defensive coordinator, but with Fangio becoming available, it appeared as though they changed gears and began to focus on bringing in the former 49ers coach.

Barry has experience coaching both 4-3 and 3-4 defenses, which means this hire wouldn’t prevent them from sticking with their current defensive scheme.

His first NFL job was as a Quality Control Coach for the 49ers back in 2000. He later took over as the LBs coach for the Buccaneers where he would remain for six years.

In 2007, the Lions offered him their defensive coordinator position, but he was part of the 0-16 Detroit team and was later fired.

Since then, Barry has coached for the Buccaneers and the University of Southern California.

Other candidates for the Redskins’ defensive coordinator position included: Wade Phillips, 49ers TEs coach Eric Mangini, and 49ers DBs coach Ed Donatell.
