Redskins Release QB Robert Griffin III

Update:

Tom Pelissero of USA Today confirms that the Redskins have officially released QB Robert Griffin III.

———-

Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN reports that the Redskins are informing QB Robert Griffin III on Monday of their plans to release him.

This comes as no surprise, even with the reports that the Redskins were holding to find a potential trade for RGIII.

While recent reports have said that as many as 10 teams could be interested in him, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for a team to part with a draft pick for a player will be a free agent in the coming days.

The Rams, Browns and Texans have all been mentioned as teams to keep an eye on in regards to RGIII among others.

Griffin, 25, was in the final year of his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract when Washington elected to pick up his fifth-year option worth $16.2 million last year.

However, they elected to bench him and make RGIII their third-string quarterback to prevent him from getting injured, which would have made his $16.2 million in 2016 fully guaranteed.

In 2014, Griffin appeared in nine games and threw for 1,694 yards while completing 68.7 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding where RGIII could end up as the news is available.
