Redskins “Very Likely” To Promote QBs Coach Matt Cavanaugh To Offensive Coordinator

Jason La Canfora reports that the Redskins are “very likely” to promote QBs coach Matt Cavanaugh to become their next offensive coordinator.

  • In addition, La Canfora says that Washington is expected to lose TE coach Wes Phillips to the Rams.

Given the success of QB Kirk Cousins under Cavanaugh, it shouldn’t come as a big surprise that the Redskins are weighing the possibility of elevating him to coordinator, replacing Sean McVay who departed for the Rams head-coaching job a few days ago.

Cavanaugh, 60, began his NFL coaching career with the Steelers back in 1992 and has worked for a number of teams including the Cardinals, 49ers, Bears, Ravens, Panthers, and Jets.

Cavanaugh has spent the past seven years working as a quarterbacks coach and was hired by the Redskins in 2015. He last worked as an offensive coordinator for the University of Pittsburgh from 2005-2008 and won a Super Bowl as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator back in 2000.

We will have more regarding the Redskins and Cavanaugh as the news is available.
