Redskins Not Expected To Sign OLB Brian Orakpo To An Extension Before Deadline

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Redskins are not expected to sign OLB Brian Orakpo to a contract extension before Tuesday’s 4pm ET deadline to negotiate with franchised players.

Orakpo mentioned last month that it is “his time” to receive a long-term deal from the team, but he also added that he has no intention of holding out for a new contract.

Instead, it appears more likely that Orakpo will play out the 2014 season under his one-year franchise tender of $11.455 million and hope to cash in as an unrestricted free agent next year.

There is no question that Orakpo is deserving a long-term deal given that he has registered 39.5 sacks in 64 career games with the Redskins. ProFootballFocus graded Orakpo as the No. 4 outside linebacker in a 3-4 system last year.

We have Orakpo listed as the No. 9 player in our Top 25 – 2015 Free Agents list.
