Redskins Place DL Jonathan Allen On Short-Term IR, Promote DL A.J. Francis

Update:

The Redskins announced that they’ve placed rookie DL Jonathan Allen on injured reserve and promoted DL A.J. Francis to their active roster.

  • Washington also signed DL Ondre Pipkins to their practice squad.

The Redskins’ practice squad now consists of:

Francis, 27, signed on with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Maryland back in 2013. He was unable to make the 53-man roster during his rookie and was waived at the start of the season.

Francis has brief stints with the Patriots, Dolphins, Seahawks, and Buccaneers before he signed on to the Redskins’ practice squad in October of last year. Washington brought Francis back on a future/reserve contract before cutting him loose coming out of the preseason.

The Redskins signed him to their practice squad this week.

In 2015, Francis appeared in three games and recorded two total tackles while playing for the Dolphins and Seahawks.

Adam Schefter reports that the Redskins plan to place rookie DL Jonathan Allen on injured reserve and later designate him to return.

This move will cost Allen the next eight weeks of the season, but he will be able to return to the team in December.

On Wednesday, reports mentioned that Allen was going to miss the remainder of the 2017 season after he suffered a Lisfranc injury in Sunday’s win over the 49ers, so it’s good news to hear that he still has a shot to return this year.

Allen, 22, was selected in the first-round of this year’s draft by the Redskins. He signed a four-year, $11.596 million contract that included a $6.573 million signing bonus.

Allen stands to make base salaries of $465,000 and $992,118 over the first two years of the agreement.

In 2017, Allen appeared in five games for the Redskins and recorded 10 tackles and a sack. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 interior defender out of 124 qualifying players.
