Redskins Plan To Keep Greg Manusky As Defensive Coordinator

According to Les Carpenter of the Washington Post, the Redskins plan on keeping defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, despite speaking with several notable defensive coaching candidates.

Reports mentioned that Washington had been in contact with defensive coordinator candidates including Gregg Williams, Todd Bowles and Steve Wilks, which implied that Manusky could be in danger of being replaced.

However, a person with knowledge of Washington’s offseason plans tells Carpenter that Redskins HC Jay Gruden was looking for “different perspectives” in the conversations with outside coaches.

As for the decision to keep Manusky, Carpenter says that it’s due in part to Gruden wanting to keep continuity with a young defense that showed promise last year.

Manusky, 52, began his NFL coach with the Redskins as their linebackers coach back in 2001. He has worked for the Chargers, 49ers and Colts before returning to Washington as their outside linebackers coach in 2016.

The Redskins would later promote Manusky to defensive coordinator for the 2017 season.

In 2018, the Redskins’ defense ranked No. 17 in total yards allowed, No. 15 in points allowed, No. 17 in rushing yards allowed and No. 15 in passing yards allowed.
