Redskins Promote Greg Manusky To DC, Hire Jim Tomsula As DL Coach

The Washington Redskins announced Monday that they’ve promoted OLB coach Greg Manusky to defensive coordinator and hired Jim Tomsula as their new defensive line coach.

  • Carol Maloney of NBC4 first reported Tomsula has reached an agreement with the team on Sunday and noted that he has prior experience working with Manusky.

After being fired by the 49ers last January, Tomsula sat out the entire 2016 season.

Tomsula, 48, began his NFL coaching career with the 49ers as their defensive line coach back in 2007. He stayed in this position for several years before he took over for Jim Harbaugh after he was fired in 2015.

Tomsula’s record with the 49ers is 6-11 (35.3 percent), which includes one game he filled in as the team’s interim head coach during the 2010 season.

Manusky, 50, began his NFL coach with the Redskins as their linebackers coach back in 2001. He has worked for the Chargers, 49ers and Colts before returning to Washington as their outside linebackers coach last year.

This will be his fourth opportunity as a defensive coordinator in the NFL.

In 2016, the Redskins were No. 18 points allowed, No. 3 total yards allowed, No. 21 rushing yards allowed and No. 2 passing yards allowed.
