Redskins RB Derrius Guice Has Undergone Three Additional Surgeries For Infection

Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post reports that Redskins rookie RB Derrius Guice Guice developed an infection after undergoing surgery to repair his torn ACL that lasted two months and required three additional procedures.

Guice says these surgeries were “flushes” that are designed to address the infected tissue. He wound up going through seven weeks of heavy rounds of antibiotics through a catheter in his arm, according to Copeland.

Guice dealt with flu-like symptoms and had to have an “orange, cloudy fluid needed to be drained from the joint.” He stayed in Florida and was under constant evaluation from his doctors including Dr. James Andrews.

“It really sucks, man,” Guice said. “Everywhere you go, you either have people asking how your knee is, how your rehab is going . . . or asking why you’re in Louisiana. ‘Why are you not with your team?’”

The good news for Guice and the Redskins is that he says the complications are now behind him and his recovery is back on track. Even so, it remains to be seen when he’ll be able to return to the practice field.

Redskins QB Alex Smith is reportedly battling an infection of his own right now that has required several surgeries.

Guice, 21, was selected with the second round of this year’s draft by the Redskins. According to OverTheCap.com, Guice signed a four-year, $4,541,936 contract that includes a $1,383,224 signing bonus.

The Redskins placed Guice on injured reserve during the preseason with a torn ACL.

During his three-year college career at LSU, Guice rushed for 3,074 yards on 471 carries (6.5 YPC) to go along with 32 receptions for 250 yards receiving 32 total touchdowns over the course 35 games.

We wish Guice the best in his return.
