Redskins Release DL Barry Cofield

The agent for veteran DL Barry Cofield, Mike McCartney, announced via his Twitter account Friday that the Redskins are releasing his client.

ESPN’s John Keim mentioned earlier in the day that Cofield may have had to take a pay cut to remain with the team.

Cofield, 30, still had another two years remaining on his six-year, $36 million contract that included $12.5 million guaranteed. He had base salaries of $4.55 million (2015) and $5.55 million (2016) coming his way over the remainder of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Cofield will create $4,122,500 in available cap space, but also leaves them with $3,555,000 in dead money.

In 2014, Cofield recorded seven tackles and a sack over the course of eight games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 68 defensive tackle in the league out of 81 qualifying players.
