Redskins Reportedly Aren’t Interested In RB C.J. Spiller

JP Finlay of CSN Washington reports that while the Redskins may be in need of help at running back, a source close to the situation tells him that Washington is not interested in recently released RB C.J. Spiller.

The Redskins’ rushing attack wasn’t very productive in the season opener and many have wondered if they would be looking to add a running back at some point this season.

Pierre Thomas has come up as a potential option, but there has been limited buzz about the idea of him re-signing with the Redskins.

In regards to Spiller, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that he may have to wait a bit for a new opportunity to surface with an NFL team, considering that there aren’t a lot of running back openings right now.

Rapoport mentions that the Saints already paid Spiller’s 2016 salary, so it’s likely he would end up signing on for the veteran minimum. With this in mind, Rapoport believes it makes sense for Spiller to wait and not jump at the first opportunity.

Spiller, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Bills back in in 2010. He spent five years in Buffalo before signing a four-year, $16 million contract that included $9 million guaranteed with the Saints.

Spiller was set to make a base salary of $1.7 million for the 2016 season when the Saints cut him loose on Tuesday.

In 2015, Spiller appeared in 13 games for the Saints and ran for 112 yards on 36 carries (3.1 YPC) to go along with 34 receptions for 239 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
