Redskins Reportedly Had Trade Discussions Involving RB Matt Jones Ahead Of Deadline

Adam Schefter mentioned on Sunday’s NFL Insiders that the Redskins had a few trade conversations with teams involving RB Matt Jones before this year’s deadline.

The emergence of Rob Kelley led to Jones being a healthy scratch in Week 10 and there has been some talk that he could continue to be inactive on gamedays moving forward.

With the news that Washington has already spoken to some teams about Jones, it certainly wouldn’t be surprising to see them explore trades during the offseason, especially if Kelley continues to look like a solid running back over the remainder of the season.

Jones, 23, is a former third-round pick of the Redskins back in 2015. He’s currently in the second year of his four-year, $2.952 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $537,059 and $639,113 over the next two years.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Jones next year would free up $489,146 in available cap space while creating $299,708 in dead money.

In 2016, Jones has appeared in seven games and rushed for 460 yards on 99 carries (4.6 YPC) to go along with eight receptions for 73 yards receiving and three total touchdowns.

We’ll have more regarding as the news is available.
