Dianna Russini of ESPN reports that Redskins ownership informed HC Jay Gruden following Sunday’s game against the Giants that he’ll be back with the team for the 2018 season.
The expectation has been that Gruden was going to return next year, so this is really just confirmation of prior reports.
A few days ago, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Gruden isn’t on the hot seat and may never have been at any point this year. According to Rapoport, there’s an understanding within the Redskins regarding the injuries they dealt with this year and how Gruden and his staff kept things together as the season played out.
Rapoport added that there are no major changes in Washington next year.
Meanwhile, Michael Lombardi reported that the Redskins are trying to extend some of their assistant coaches, which further implies that Gruden is safe.
Gruden, 50, began his NFL coaching career with the Buccaneers as an offensive assistant. He spent seven years in the position before departing for a job with the Florida Tuskers.
Gruden returned to the NFL as the Bengals offensive coordinator in 2011 before he was hired as the Redskins coach for the 2014 season.
During his four years in Washington, Gruden has led them to a record of 28-34 (45.2 percent), which includes one playoff appearance back in 2015.
