Report: Free Agent TE Fred Davis Charged With DUI A Day After Indefinite Suspension

Update:

Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports that impending free agent TE Fred Davis was pulled over Thursday and charged with DUI in Fairfax County, Virginia.

  • Jones adds that Davis’ arrested took place at 3:45 pm Thursday. Davis’ agent declined to comment on the situation.

This news comes just a day after Redskins announced that Davis had been suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Davis issued a statement following his suspension, which is located below.

All things considered, it’s looking more and more likely that Davis’ career in the NFL could be coming to an end. This DUI isn’t going to help his case for being reinstated before the start of the 2014 season.

Fred Davis released a statement regarding his indefinite suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy on Wednesday.

“I would like to clarify the circumstances that resulted in my current suspension. In the past, I made the mistake of knowingly ingesting a banned substance. For over two years, I’ve worked very hard to eliminate marijuana from my life, and I have not had a positive test for it since 2011. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I took a supplement that contained a banned substance. I now know that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and may contain banned substances. The NFL Policy is strict, and not knowing that a supplement might contain a banned substance doesn’t excuse a violation of the policy. I’ve worked closely with the NFLPA and NFL to resolve this violation, and I will be permitted to apply for reinstatement in the fall. I look forward to staying in football shape, remaining in compliance with the NFL policy, and having a chance to get back on the field to contribute to a team’s success next season.”

The Washington Redskins announced on Wednesday that TE Fred Davis has been suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Jason La Canfora reported back in January that Davis was facing an six-game suspension, but it appears as though his ban could be longer than that.

Davis, 28, is set to be an unrestricted free agent in a matter of weeks, so this is hardly the type of things that’s going to help him secure even a modest contract on the open market.

Davis has had a history of failed drug tests during his time in the NFL and previously served a four-game suspension for a failed drug test.

Last year, Davis played sparingly for Redskins and was relegated to a backup role after the emergence of rookie TE Jordan Reed. In ten games, Davis caught seven passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.
