Redskins Trade 5th-Rd Pick To 49ers For TE Derek Carrier

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that the Redskins have traded a conditional fifth-round pick to the 49ers in return for TE Derek Carrier.

  • Barrows adds that the 49ers will specifically be receiving a 2017 fifth-round selection from the Redskins.
  • According to Ian Rapoport, the Bears and Saints were also in the mix for a potential trade involving Carrier.

There was talk last week that NFL teams were showing interest in some of the 49ers tight ends including Carrier, so this doesn’t come as a huge surprise.

Washington needed to find some depth at tight end after they lost Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen for the season. It’s worth mentioning that the Redskins did sign veteran TE D.J. Williams to a contract as well as TE Ernst Brun, but it seems likely that at least of the these two players won’t make the team.

Carrier, 25, signed a three-year, $2.985 million contract that included a $400,000 signing bonus with the 49ers back in March. He stands to make base salaries of $585,000 (2015), $800,000 (2016), and $950,000 (2017) over the remainder of the contract.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Carrier will free up $318,333 in cap space while creating $400,000 in dead money.

In 2014, Carries appeared in 11 games for the 49ers and recorded nine receptions for 105 yards receiving.
