Report: NFL Confirms That 2014 Salary Cap Will Be $133M

Update:

Jason La Canfora reports that the NFL has confirmed that the 2014 salary cap will be $133 million exactly.

  • Albert Breer notes that the 2014 salary cap is $9.4 million over what it was last year.
  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier in the day that the cap could increase to $140 million in 2014 and to $150 million 2015.

We’ll have the 2014 Cap Space figures for every team shortly.

Tom Pelissero of USA Today reports the 2014 salary cap could be set as soon as Friday, but is more likely to be in place by Monday.

  • According to Pelissero, the 2014 cap should come in around $132-$133 million.
  • Mike Florio, citing a league source, reports that the 2014 salary cap will be $133 million.

This coincides with Pro Football Talk’s reports located below.

Teams like the Cowboys and Steelers are still projected to be over the cap, so even dollar of caps space counts for them.

Last year, the NFL’s salary cap was just $123 million, so an increase above $132 million — possibly closer to $135 million — would result in as much as 9.75 percent increase, according to Florio.

Early projections had the cap at just over $126 million. The NFLPA reportedly has an option that would boost the cap by $2 million, so it will be interesting to see if they elected to use it this year.

The final cap figure won’t be in place until after the NFL owners meeting that will be held in the next few weeks.

————-

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that a source has informed him that the 2014 Ssalary cap is likely to end up exceeding the recent projection of $132 million by a “few million.”

  • Florio’s source added that similar increases are expected in the coming years.
  • Florio mentions that it remains unknown whether or not the 2014 cap increase will come at the cost of borrowing against future cap increases.
  • Florio wonders whether that this could be an attempt by the NFLPA to help executive director DeMaurice Smith maintain his position in the union.
