Report: 49ers Trade WR A.J. Jenkins To The Chiefs For WR Jon Baldwin

Update:

Reid Ferrin reports that the 49ers have traded A.J. Jenkins to the Chiefs in return for WR Jonathan Baldwin.

Statement from 49ers GM Trent Baalke:

‘We are pleased to add Jonathan to our team and look forward to incorporating him into our offense.”

Statement from Chiefs GM John Dorsey:

‘Jon Baldwin is a hardworking player and a professional. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward. A.J. is a talented individual with a skill set that we feel can add value to our football team.’

It’s rare to see a player-for-player swap in the NFL, but clearly both of these guys have gotten off to miserable starts to their NFL careers. A change of scenery would probably be good for all parties involved.

Jenkins and Baldwin are both former first-round picks.

Jenkins’ training camp has been so underwhelming that local reporters mentioned that he wasn’t worth a roster, despite the fact that San Francisco used a first-round pick on him in 2012.

Kansas City has been waiting for Baldwin to take the next step for a few years now, but he hasn’t been able to put it together. He dropped some passes in the Chiefs second preseason, so it appears as though the new regime in Kansas City was prepared to move on.

Tom Pelissero reports that the San Francisco 49ers are going to trade former first-round pick WR A.J. Jenkins to the Chiefs, barring a last-minute snag.

  • Pelissero adds that the deal is not final, but “all indications are Jenkins’ fresh start will come in Kansas City.”
